What is Push/Pull?
Push/pull is a key ergonomic measurement that gauges the force required to start and sustain the movement of a cart or piece of equipment. This force is a direct indicator of how ergonomic your caster selection is: the lower the force, the easier and safer it is to maneuver equipment.
How is Push/Pull Measured?
To measure push/pull accurately, we use devices force gauges to apply and record the exact force needed to set a loaded cart in motion and keep it moving. Essential components of the measurement process include:
- Surface Type: Using the same surface type as the cart’s actual work environment (such as smooth concrete or carpet) is critical for accurate readings.
- Load Weight: Testing with a load representative of everyday use ensures the data’s relevance.
- Speed and Handle Angle: Consistent speed and handle angle are essential to producing repeatable, reliable results.
This testing approach provides a precise snapshot of push/pull demands, ensuring that the data you receive is reflective of real-world conditions.

ISO Standards for Push/Pull Measurement

ISO 11228-2 sets the standard for acceptable push and pull forces for manually moved carts and equipment. Specifically aimed at reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, this standard defines ergonomic limits for initial and sustained forces, helping businesses create safer, more efficient work environments.
ISO Push/Pull Force Requirements
ISO 11228-2 is essential for industries where employees frequently push or pull heavy carts and equipment, as it sets clear guidelines to ensure safe force limits and reduce strain. Following this standard reinforces your commitment to employee safety while minimizing the risk of injuries from overexertion. For many companies, aligning with ISO 11228-2 translates to fewer injury-related disruptions, enhanced productivity, and lower long-term costs.
Here are some guidelines you should follow based on ISO standards:
- Limit Initial Push Force: Keep initial push forces under 22 lbs (10 kg) whenever possible to reduce strain when starting movement.
- Control Sustained Pull Force: Aim to keep sustained pull forces below 13 lbs (6 kg) for continuous movement to reduce fatigue.
- Optimize Handle Height and Positioning: Position handles between hip and shoulder height to allow for a natural grip, reducing awkward postures and strain.
- Ensure Appropriate Work Surfaces: Smooth, even surfaces require less force and are easier on employees. For rough or inclined surfaces, try to further reduce force limits to compensate for increased resistance.
- Monitor Task Frequency and Duration: For tasks that require high-force exertion, limit frequency and allow recovery time to prevent cumulative strain.
