Ergonomic Testing Reveals How to Best Assess Injury Risk During Turning
Early findings indicate that organizations normally underestimate the force that an associate exerts when turning a cart
COLUMBUS, Ohio – February 10, 2022 – New findings provide a guide for force measurement during turning to assess the level of risk with turning exertions. Turning has been noted to pose a higher risk for injury to the spine than straight-line pushing and pulling. This fact necessitates the need for accurate turning force measurements when quantifying risk for injury relative to biomechanically determined guidelines.
Caster Connection, provider of caster and wheel solutions, collaborated with the NSF Center for Disruptive Musculoskeletal Innovations (CDMI) to fund The Ohio State University Spine Research Institute. Together, we discovered the importance of providing specific guidelines for injury prevention in turn testing.
“Because turning has been noted to pose a higher risk for injury to the spine than straight-line pushing and pulling, we wanted to assist in providing recommendations for force measurement during turning in order to help prevent employee injury,” said Joe Lyden, President of Caster Connection.
Additional findings include:
- Industry normally underestimates the force that an associate exerts when they turn a cart.
- The importance of keeping consistent time sequences when measuring push/pull on the turn.
- The critical nature of using an adapter with the single-axis push/pull gauge when measuring turn force.
The objective of this study was to build upon previous push/pull force measurement recommendations by providing recommendations for force measurement during turning.
