The best casters on earth allow you to move your product easily and with the least effort possible. This actually poses a problem in some cases though. Your carts can move when you are loading product on to them. That’s when you need locking casters, or casters with brakes. Locking casters come in three main types: side lock, tech lock, and total lock, but there are a few other options as well.
Side lock brakes are engaged on the side of the casters and provide tension, essentially through the turning of a nut. These are widely used in applications from barbeques to heavy industrial casters. They get the job done with no frills.
Tech lock brakes, also called face contact brakes at times, are much more robust, and like the side lock brake, stop the wheel from moving forward. The tech lock brake is engaged with a pedal in most cases. The Built-in Brake is a perfect example of a tech lock brake.
Finally, the total lock brake engages both the wheel and the swivel rig. The total lock stops the wheel and keeps the swivel from rotating. In this way, you have the best stability for performing tasks like loading and transporting. The Ideal-Stop is an excellent example of a locking caster with a total lock brake.
